Dr. Ken Abrams is a native Rhode Islander, attending school through his bachelor’s degree at the University of Rhode Island. After URI it was off to Stillwater, Oklahoma to obtain his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) from Oklahoma State University in 1985. He completed his small animal medicine and surgery internship at the prestigious Angell Memorial Animal Hospital in Boston and then pursued his advanced training in his residency in comparative ophthalmology at the University of Tennessee. It was back to New England where he was staff ophthalmologist at the Tufts School of Veterinary Medicine and Angell Memorial Animal Hospital, during which time he achieved his board-certification in veterinary ophthalmology in the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists (ACVO). In 1992 he started his own referral veterinary ophthalmology practice, Veterinary Ophthalmology Services, in Warwick, Rhode Island where he has been for the past 15 years.
Dr. Abrams is the author of several scientific articles and textbook chapters with a strong clinical interest in retinal disease, intraocular surgery, laser surgery, and glaucoma. Since the practice has a very large caseload, he has published a number of review articles on various diseases, including research into the mysterious, blinding retinal disease called Sudden Acquired Retinal Degeneration Syndrome or SARDS.
On a personal note, Dr. Abrams is married to Dr. Kathy Pointek-Abrams, a general veterinary practitioner. They have 2 Golden Retrievers (Iris & Drummer), an African Grey parrot (Cal), and an Arabian horse (Tut). Quality time off includes spending time with the ‘kids’ and while Kathy is horse-back riding, Dr A is usually cycling to train for masters bicycle racing around New England! In September, 2006 he had the adventure of a lifetime when he rode his bike cross-country from San Diego to Savannah in 26 days to celebrate his 50th (almost 51 during the ride!) birthday.
